South African Museums Association National Conference 2018

The South African Museums Association National Conference for 2018 will be held at the National English Literary Museum, Makhanda.

Delegates from around the country will present papers on the conference theme: “Hyperconnected Museums: New Approaches, New Publics”.  ‘Hyperconnectivity’ refers to the multiple means of communication we have today, including face-to-face contact, email, instant messaging, Skype and video call, social media and the Internet. This global network of connections constantly becomes more complex, more diverse and more integrated. In the hyperconnected world of today, museums must continuously find ways to make use of these trends in their interaction with their communities.

Museums are an inherent part of their local communities, their cultural landscape and their natural environment, and it is impossible to understand the role of museums without taking into account all the existing and potential connections open to them. Thanks to technology, museums can now interpret their collections in a variety of different ways in order to reach beyond their core audience and find new publics. As museums strive to maintain their relevance in society, they can shift their attentions to a diversity of local and national communities, and find new ways of interpreting and presenting their collections.
